Better Light, Longer Run Times:
Why High-Output LED's Are Right For You

by Jackie Petro

Light & Motion’s new line of solid state LED lights are an industry breakthrough. The Sunray 1000 delivers an incredible 1000 lumens of light, reliably and efficiently. That’s more light than the best 22w HID systems.  The SR1000 is so efficient that burn times increased to 85 minutes at full power.  The SR1000 is 70% more efficient than the same battery driving a 22w HID and kicks out more light!  With 3 instant adjust power settings, burn times are 170 minutes at ½ power. The solid state construction means no bulbs to break or replace.  And with the instant on/off feature, warm up time is eliminated and valuable video time saved.

Because LED’s are so new to Underwater Video lighting we wanted to give you the skinny on some basic facts that surround underwater video lighting and LED’s.

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode (read more here). During the last few years, lighting has seen an increasing number of uses for low-power LED products used primarily small flashlights, decorative lighting and holiday lights.  However, recent developments have pushed LED technology into the spotlight as a true player in the high-output lighting market. LED’s have the ability to produce a very bright white light similar to the sun. This generates a tremendous output in a super compact light head—both very positive things whether you’re diving to dark places or traveling with minimal luggage space. LED’s also utilize a solid state design.  The primary advantage of solid-state systems is that they are far more reliable than mechanical bulbs and have far longer life.  LED’s typical lifespan is 50,000 hours, compared to the 1000 hours or less for bulbs.

LED Myths and Misconceptions

Myth: LED Lights Aren’t that Bright

Fact: Currently, high-powered LED’s are developing at a rapid rate. Consuming less than 12 watts of power, our Sunray 1000 (which produce a 1000 lumen output) lights deliver more light than a 22 watt HID. No longer are LED’s just little ‘blinky’ lights on your keychain. They are a viable and surprisingly bright lighting solution.

Myth: LED’s Lights won’t work for UW Video

Fact: Light & Motion Sunray 1000 light heads contain multiple LED’s that are designed specifically for UW video. Light & Motion’s proprietary Micro Peened Reflector Technology was developed specifically around the characteristics of LED’s. Our 9 LED micro peened reflector produces a wonderfully even beam pattern which is devoid of hot spots and is highly efficient unlike diffusers.

Our Color Temperature Management System (CTMS) is another industry first. Our bezel allows easy drop in of standard-sized color filters to balance the LED light to the background light dramatically improving color in your video.   Without filter the color temperature of the Sunray 1000 is 6500K.

Myth: LED’s Don’t Produce Any Heat

Fact: Not true. LED’s DO produce heat. HID and Halogen systems can withstand a lot of heat in the filament/bulb itself. You can feel this heat radiating out if you put your hand in front of the light when it’s powered on. LED’s produce and retain heat inside the body at the circuit board. Proper design is important to make sure that this heat is minimized and directed to the water.  We design thermal control circuitry into our LED systems to protect the light under all conditions.

Myth: Light is Light, How Different Could It Be from HID?

Fact: While each technology has its strengths, it’s important to know what each is—and isn’t.  HID (High Intensity Discharge) light uses a quartz bulb filled with gas and a delicate meta filament. The bulb emits a very bright bluish white light.  An HID bulb may last 3 years, but because it uses a bulb, it can break if it experiences a hard impact.

Conversely, LED systems utilize solid-state construction and can be produced to emit many different light colors (of which we choose the brightest and whitest). This solid-state construction gives LED light systems their durability. No bulbs to break.

In addition LEDs, if properly selected, have better CRI (color rendering index)and more stable output compared to HIDs and Halogens.

Finally, there is no excuse left to not buy the Sunray 1000 LED Underwater Video Lighting System! For a comparable price to other lighting systems you get super bright light, exceeding long burn times in an almost indestructible system. What’s not to love?
