About
Rocky:
Dr. Rocky Strong is chief scientist and underwater cinematographer
for Air Jaws: Sharks of South Africa, which kicks off SHARK WEEK
August 12, 2001. For the research expedition and program, Dr. Strong
is the first scientist to extensively study the unusual flight
behavior exhibited by great whites in South Africa.
Dr.
Strong formally began to study the oceans in 1984
when he was an Our World Underwater scholar with
Light & Motion co-founder Michael Topolovac.
His dissertation focused on the sensory basis of
orientation and navigation in the lemon shark.
His
award-winning underwater still photography has been
published in numerous books and magazines. Dr. Strong
is widely published in the area of shark behavior
including primarily that of the great white, but
also the horn shark, hammerhead, lemon and the extremely
rare megamouth shark. He has amassed an unprecedented
amount of field experience during his young career
and may well have had more "time in the water" with
more species of sharks in more places than any other
scientist in history.
